It all started with the introduction of computers
in the mid 80’s. Technology was a newer thing, and composers thought it would
be pretty “neat-o” to include these ‘interesting’ sounds and make their music
seem different. This lead to the introduction of bubble-gum pop and trashy
music (A.K.A. the 90’s), and today’s music: beats with computer generated
sounds and lyrics talking about either partying, sex, sex and partying, or
being rich. All of which are really stupid and annoyingly repetitive. Some may
argue that there is good in the music industry of today, which is true. There
are a few golden stars, yet they never seem to stay on the charts because the vast
majority of the young human species enjoys exactly what I despise; shitty
music.
We see these young people. They’re walking down the
hallways with their iPod in ear, always listening to either Katy Perry or Lil’
Wayne and usually sporting Uggs, LuluLemon pants, and a bitchy attitude.
Occasionally they wear band t-shirts (such as Nirvana, the Beatles, Van Halen),
which I find surprising because we all know they know nothing about any of
these bands, they just bought the shirt because “it was pretty”. This is the
classic example of the term, “bittie”, and bitties are the ones buying this
music and listening to it, still thinking that they are superior to the rest of
us. Their ipod is filled with Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, and any
other musician that could or will ever be on the Disney channel. Go on iTunes,
chart-topping hits include songs such as “Grenade” by Bruno Mars, “Firework” by
Katy Perry, and “Baby” by Justin Bieber. Crap, crap, and more crap. Scroll to
the bottom of these charts and you might
find a decent song that doesn’t include the vocals of a prepubescent boy (A.K.A.
Justin Bieber) and the use of Auto-Tune (A.K.A people with no talent).
The majority of us, even the bitties, can all agree
these lyrics make little to no sense. From the pounding beats it’s often hard
to understand exactly what these “musicians” mean when they include lyrics such
as;
“Laugh now die later muthaf-cker
You’s a b-tch like zeta phi beta muthaf-cker”
You’s a b-tch like zeta phi beta muthaf-cker”
-
Lil’ Wayne
Thank you for that, Wayne. Of course this makes sense, right? From the inaccurate grammar to the poignant use of swear words, this man must be a lyrical genius. It’s things like this man, who accidentally shot himself at the age of twelve and calls himself “Lil’ Wayne”, who make me question the state of the music industry. Is he really that amazing? Are any of them that amazing? Would Selena Gomez be as big an accomplished musician if she wasn’t already an actress, would Miley Cyrus be able to start her own career without the use of her father as her way in? Of course not. This just goes to show that the music industry is corrupt, the people that shouldn’t be on top rule over the authenticity of genuine musicians.
The only possible resolution for this issue would
be to re-invent the music industry. Back to the way it was decades ago, where
music was everywhere and people could gather from all around for a really great
show (circa Woodstock 1969). The heart of the music industry has been taken out
and replaced by a computer generating false and over-synthesized beats, our
ears no longer able to hear the true sound of a beating heart. There is no more
soul, no more emotion. We need to bring back the use of actual instruments,
trading in a computer for a guitar. Human beings are capable of so much more
than this. We are able to do so much, yet have limited ourselves to such
blatant stupidity. We need to bring back the heart of the music industry, and
although it’s easy to say it’s hard to do, but it’s needed. I can honestly say
I’m tired of having to change the radio every three seconds because of the
infiltration of pop-techno bullshit that has no business being inside of my ear
canal, and having to turn on my iPod to a song from the 70’s in order to
restore my faith in humanity. If music speaks, what is it saying now? I can
never fully comprehend what it’s telling me, but through the hardcore beats and
terrible lyrics all I seem to hear is “turn
it off”.

Çouldn't agree more. I'm just glad that I can now download "good" music of my own choosing to my computer, burn it to disc and turn off the stupid radio and all those squeaky teen voices or rappers crapping with their mouths instead of their backsides.
